The Martlets

After a special Valentines Day lunch at The Martlets, with heart-shaped cakes for dessert, the Guys in Pink (our Activities Team: Anna, Jules & Ellie) did the rounds with a special ‘Love Trolley’ spreading the love to every resident, with a gift of chocolate and serenading them with love songs!

There was much cause for celebration on Friday when the Happiness Haven, our new sensory and activities room was opened at The Martlets. Residents and staff partied through the afternoon with Bucks Fizz, balloons, wacky wigs and of course the now customary Friday sing-along. Team Leaders Helen and Tina had the joint honour of cutting the red ribbon to formally launch the new middle floor room, which is set to become a great new resource for residents, families and friends.

A great time was had by all at The Martlets when Claire came to sing tunes from The Carpenters this week. Much singing, clapping and dancing!

Martlets resident Keith celebrated his birthday with family and residents at this week’s Friday afternoon sing-along, now a regular fixture. Since Keith formerly played alto sax in a jazz band (see pic) we took the big band theme as our inspiration and, after cake, raised the roof!

Martlets resident Bill is something of an expert in ribbons as he sold wholesale floristry merchandise for many years. He had a field day with this box of ribbons we found in our store cupboard during a recent clear out, explaining in detail all about the differences. Always good to hear from the experts!

Tears, ballads and handbag guitars were all part of Tania’s performance this week at The Martlets.

A brisk winter walk along Littlehampton harbour ended in a warming coffee and cake for Martlets residents. It was a rare opportunity for David and his wife Margaret to go on a proper trip together. They were delighted!

The gift that keeps on giving…Brenda received this beautiful 500-piece jigsaw as a Christmas present from The Martlets. She has now completed it, and has had it framed and donated to decorate the managers top floor office where it now takes pride of place.

Entertainer Steve really got toes tapping, hands clapping and tongues wagging with a lovely set of old time favourites at The Martlets.

The Martlets residents enjoyed a whole host of Christmas trees (42 to be exact, decorated by different local groups and businesses) at a sneak preview of the Christmas Tree Festival in The Church of St Mary the Virgin, East Preston. WE also got in the festive spirit once we put our lovely Christmas tree up inside the home. We have also had Entertainer Steve visit recently, and he really got toes tapping, hands clapping and tongues wagging with a lovely set of old time favourites at The Martlets.

Our ingenious ‘fireplace’, invented by Handy Ruth and decorated by Jules, is fast becoming a hot favourite with residents.

Hazel the Harpist regaled a crowd of Martlets residents with a concert of popular and traditional songs, finishing up with a Happy Birthday for Ruth and Vida who shared their celebration on that day. Afterwards, residents were delighted to have a chance to explore the mini harp for themselves, to see how it sounded up close and personal.

Back by popular demand, Bramble the Cavachon makes a welcome return to see all his friends at The Martlets.

Martlets residents Janet and George enjoyed a fabulous night out at the Shaw Awards gala dinner and party. Janet received an award for being a caring resident before being whizzed around the dance floor to the sounds of a live band! Truly a night to remember.

John enjoyed chocolate cake and a birthday kiss from his wife Betty, both residents at the Martlets.

Residents had a lovely time on Saturday afternoon to looking around East Preston Market.

Mary, The Martlets newest resident, is settling in just fine and showing some hidden talents! George also got suited, booted and generally made a fuss of, for a big forthcoming night out. He chose the blue silk waistcoat as it’s Rangers colours!

Really heartening to see old friendships being rekindled and new friendships being made in Robin lounge at The Martlets. Daphne, Marj and Pat (Ivy) putting the world to rights!

A little bit of magic at The Martlets from Dave the magician kept residents entertained this week.

The lovely Veronica on our dementia floor was chatting about how she worked in catering, staff offered if she would like to dish her own lunch up today. She washed her hands, put in her apron and hair net and dished up her brunch. Look at her smile!

Martlets residents have been going shopping crazy in the run up to Christmas, enjoying various shopping trips to Brighton, Bognor, as well as local garden centres and supermarkets.

The Martlet residents paying tribute on Remembrance Day

Brian, whose wife lives at The Martlets care home, went live on Spirit FM to show his appreciation to the hard working staff at the home.

A group of care home workers with more than a century’s combined experience in the sector have been recognised at a celebration at The Martlets in East Preston.

The Martlets in West Sussex has marked 10 years of delivering care for local residents with a celebratory party.
