Mavis Harris celebrated her big day at Wylesfield care home, in Llandrindod Wells, alongside friends, family members and other residents. 

The town’s mayor, Councillor Steve Deeks-D’Silva, also attended the tea party held in the care home’s lounge.

Mavis was born in 1916 in the small town of Cefn Forest in Caerphilly, before moving to Llandrindod Wells after meeting her husband, Leslie, who worked in the council office in the town. The pair lived together with their two children, Barbara and Michael.

During the Second World War, Leslie served in the medical corps, which left Mavis playing an active role back at home, looking after the house and children. She also worked for the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service, and was a member of the Women’s Institute, serving as treasurer for seven years.

Mavis, who has four grand-children and four great-grandchildren, moved into the home in 2017 and quickly formed a close bond with residents and staff alike.

Lowrie Owen, manager at the Shaw healthcare-operated care home, said; “Mavis is such a wonderful resident, who is always full of stories and advice.

“Her secret to a long life is definitely optimism, as she told us about the importance of always looking forward, without dwelling on the past. We are very honoured to have such a lovely lady residing with us at Wylesfield.”
