A former nurse has celebrated her 100th birthday at Llys Hafren in Welshpool.

Joyce Willan, who was born in Melverley in Shropshire and worked for much of her career at Oswestry Hospital, enjoyed a weekend of celebrations at the care home.

The celebrations began when Llanfair Caereinion School visited the home to play violin music for Mrs Willan – a love of hers and her husband.

Mrs Willan was also joined by her children and grandchildren for a special party at the home, where residents and visitors were offered a variety of sweet treats and she was given the chance to open her card from the Queen.

As well as a keen music lover, Mrs Willan and her husband had a number of pets throughout the years, and they travelled regularly – visiting Bethlehem, the Mount of Olives and the Sistine Chapel.

Beryl Wickstead, manager of the Shaw healthcare operated home, said: “Joyce has been with us since September 2020 and continues to be such a wonderful character.

“After such a challenging time for health and social care, we were delighted to be able to share this special occasion with Joyce and welcome her family to the home.”

Llys Hafren is situated on Severn Road in Welshpool and provides care for up to 40 residents, including those with dementia.
