Katherine Shaw has a wealth of knowledge about Learning Disability (LD) environments and what works well for the people in them.

She had an idea about wanting to contribute back to the LD community by reading her favourite books for those with Learning Disabilities – now she’s doing exactly that! Leadon Bank is operated by Shaw healthcare where Katherine is a regular attendee of the day care service.

Each day at 3pm the employees sit down for a cup of tea with everyone and have a chat for 30 minutes about anything they like. The conversation often sprawls off in different directions. During one of their sessions, Katherine spoke about how much she liked reading to people and would like to visit different places to read her favourite stories to people, namely Megan Baker House which is located on the same site as Leadon Bank.

The pandemic situation has meant that Katherine has not been able to fulfil her ideas but luckily for her the team at Leadon Bank’s day centre knew a man who could help. They contact Shaw healthcare’s head office and arrange for their marketing team to come film Katherine reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Katherine read her interpretation on one sunny day in June and the video has now been posted on You Tube and is being shared around infant schools, nurseries and LD services who have already fed back that they have enjoyed Katherine’s video and look forward to her next videos and possibly welcoming her in person when the social distancing relaxes further. She is very pleased with the finished product.
