Residents at Danbryn Care Home in Radyr are spicing up their daily routine thanks to an exciting new partnership with local chilli expert Chris Fowler, founder of Welsh Dragon Chilli.

The collaboration combines Chris’s passion for chilli growing with Danbryn’s commitment to providing engaging, sensory-rich experiences for people with disabilities.

Danbryn offers high-quality accommodation and support for adults with complex needs. Now, through this unique community link, residents have had the opportunity to explore the vibrant world of chilli cultivation and production.

Chris, who started growing chillies in 2004 to satisfy a craving for fresh jalapeños, has since turned his hobby into a flourishing business. With his polytunnel based at Cefn Mably Farm Park, Chris grows a wide range of chillies – from the mild Padron to the fiery Trinidad Scorpion – and produces a line of artisanal chilli sauces that are stocked locally and loved by fans far and wide.

Chris commented: “It’s incredibly rewarding to share what I do with the residents and see their interest in how food is grown. Chillies are colourful, tactile, and full of character – they spark a lot of joy and conversation.”

The initiative supports Shaw healthcare’s ethos of enrichment, inclusion, and meaningful engagement. Gardening activities and sensory interactions with the chillies provide therapeutic value, while tasting sessions and sauce-making demos offer fun, flavour-filled experiences. As the UK's largest employee-owned care provider, Shaw champions initiatives that improve wellbeing, independence, and inclusion in all its services.

Service manager at Danybryn, Simon Kezic-Williams said: “We’re always looking for ways to make life exciting and fulfilling for the people we support. Welsh Dragon Chilli has brought a new energy into the home – it’s local, hands-on, and truly enjoyable for everyone.”

Residents and staff alike are now looking forward to growing some of their own chilli plants at Danbryn – with expert advice from Chris, of course.
