A former serviceman has been presented with his National Service medal and Veteran’s pin – 70 years after joining the RAF.
John Mildenhall, was celebrating his 88th birthday with friends, family and staff at Forest View care home where he regularly attends day care and was surprised and overjoyed to finally receive these well-deserved honours which were presented by Councillor Peter Reed, Chairman of Mid Sussex Council.
Team Leader, Chris Aldridge, encourages visitors to reminisce and recall stories from their past and John is always keen to share his experiences of his time with RAF and how he was stationed in West Kirby and then Bedfordshire, before moving onto Gloucester.
It was during one of these talks which John recited his ID number which was duly noted by a few people and, following discussions with family members and the Service Manager, Chris contacted the Home Office to arrange for the necessary paperwork to be completed in order for the medals to be sent.
Shaw healthcare covered the cost for the medal which now takes pride of place in John’s home which he shares with his wife, Anne, who he met ballroom dancing and later married in 1957.
John commented: “I am so overwhelmed by all of this. Thank you so much”.
The celebrations included a buffet and live musical entertainment which was funded by donations from Mathew Gallager of P&S Gallager Funeral Directors and Tim Wheeler of Wheelbase Garage Service, Burgess Hill.
