World Alzheimers Day was recognised at three of Shaw’s care homes in West Sussex last month with a magnificent balloon release in the sunshine. Rotherlea in Petworth, Elmcroft in Shoreham and Burleys Wood in Crawley invited residents, relatives and staff to buy a balloon on which there was a dove attached to write a message, perhaps in memory of a loved one. After a wonderful tea party, the balloons were released into the September sunshine and a poignant moment of silence followed before the clouds turned grey and the rain arrived.
Rotherlea, in particular, was very lucky with the weather as just after the balloons were released, it started to rain. The residents, relatives and staff all had an enjoyable afternoon and Rotherlea alone were thrilled to raise £230 for the Alzheimers Society. The homes all mentioned they were proud to be involved in hi-lighting and helping the growing number of older people living with dementia.
Every year on 21 September, Alzheimer Associations across the globe unite to recognise World Alzheimer’s Day with events taking place internationally. With large numbers of people involved and media coverage, these events can make a real difference for people with dementia, their families and carers worldwide.
