Ralph Austin, who lives in Croft Meadow care home, in Tanyard Lane, Steyning, had his name picked out of a "wish pot" at the home.

Two days later, the 80 year old was met at Shoreham Airport by Paul, of Brighton Scenic Air Tours, who took Mr Austin, his 12 year old grandson, Harry Cordingly, and a carer on a tour of the Sussex coastline.

"I haven't flown for 15 years, and never in a small plane," said Mr Austin.  "The most exciting bit was taking off and I would recommend anyone who wants a bit of excitement to go on a plane ride.  You are never too old".

Ian James-Delves, Community liaison Manager for Shaw healthcare, which runs the care home, said, "After the great success of the pick-a-wish scheme at other Shaw homes, we decided it was time to start the fun.  Each resident gets to put a wish into the pot and one wish gets granted each month".  He said, "The idea is to encourage a positive, can-do attitude within the home where dreams and ambitions are a part of life for the residents, regardless of physical ability or age".
