Surehaven has just recruited a Medical Director, Barry Connell, who will be based at their Newport office.
Barry, originally from Northern Ireland, trained as a doctor in London. Following a stint as an infantry medic he went on to specialise in psychiatry. His career took him to Hong Kong where, in time, he left the army to set himself up in private practice serving locals and expatriates alike. He formed the territory’s first community multi-disciplinary mental health service, The Practice, which continues to this day.
In 2000 he and his wife Anji took a planned career break, with Barry retraining as a chef at the Hotel Ritz in Paris. They returned to London in 2001 where, after a period working as a commis chef for Gordon Ramsey, Barry went back to the day job as a consultant psychiatrist in his local NHS Trust in Norfolk. Since then he has pursued an interest in politics, representing his home town as a county councillor and becoming an advisor to a shadow health spokesperson. Along the way he and Anji have grabbed any spare time to indulge their love of travel and hotels. He is eagerly looking forward to working with Shaw and Surehaven.
