Board of Shaw healthcare (Group)
Alun has had involvement with Shaw since May 1995 and was elected as Chairman for Shaw Group when it was formed in October 2006. Previous appointments include Honorary Treasurer of Swansea Cricket & Football Club, The Prince’s Trust and Swansea Festival of Music. Alun still holds the position of Honorary Treasurer at the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust and the Welsh School in London.
After reading Biology at Oxford, Jeremy taught at secondary level for four years and then worked as a priest in a Cardiff parish. He then set up the Secondary Housing Association for Wales (SHAW) which created ten new Housing Associations in Wales and at one stage was developing a fifth of all new social Housing in Wales. Shaw was asked by the NHS to develop and then to manage a small specialist care home. Other NHS orders followed and Jeremy then split off the care and development business into a separate exempt charity; Shaw Homes. This won many tenders to develop and operate care homes and hospitals for Councils and the NHS. In 2006 he led the management buy-out of the business and its conversion into a staff owned company. The buy-out price became the £15 million cash endowment of a separate charity which gives grants and loans for health and care purposes.
Alan is responsible for the maintenance and management of the Group’s property portfolio, which is comprised of 75 care facilities and 350 affordable homes, together with the development of new healthcare facilities. Alan was responsible for the design, development and construction of some 32 new care home and healthcare facilities over the last 10 years, with a Capex in excess of £150 million. The development programme has been implemented through Public Private Partnerships, PFI and JCT Contracts. Shaw has always prided itself in the quality of its buildings and Alan’s role has involved ensuring the expectations of its care team, customers, service users and funders have been met. Prior to joining the Shaw Organisation in 1997, Alan was Development Director for an up-market retirement home developer and previously for a substantial building contractor, holding directorates in Construction, Land and Development.
